April 22nd was Earth Day, an annual demonstration of support for environmental protection. In fact, 2020 marks 50 years since the first ever Earth Day back in 1970 when almost 20 million people across the USA gathered at various events to highlight the need to fight pollution and protect the planet. President Richard Nixon planted a tree at the White House and created the Environmental Protection Agency that same year.
Five decades on, and Earth Day has become a truly global event with millions of people taking part around the world in all manner of events around the theme of ‘climate action.’ Many brands also took the opportunity to highlight their commitment to everything which Earth Day stands for, and we’ve collected a few examples below.
LEGO and NASA
You can build anything with LEGO and together with the spacegazers at NASA, they’ve challenged the world to create their very own planet using the colourful bricks. It’s another great initiative which keeps people of all ages safe and engaged at home during these challenging times, and resulted in lots of wonderful creations from around the world.

Ben and Jerry’s
The beloved ice cream brand teamed up with activist group Future Coalition to highlight the need to take action to highlight the plight of the planet. They used their platform to promote Earth Day Live, reimagining a social movement for the digital age with three days of performances, petitions and information from April 22nd to 24th.

In addition to highlighting Earth Day Live, the American clothing brand reaffirmed its commitment to being more sustainable in everything they do. That includes cutting CO2 emissions by 40% by 2025 and a large reduction in the use of water in the manufacturing processes. There’s a full address from EVP and President Liz O’Neill here.
Materials science company Pangaia is all about creating products for people to use everyday which also work towards saving the environment. For Earth Day 2020, they have partnered with nonprofit Sea Trees, which aims to protect coastal ecosystems through reforestation. For each comment and tag on their post, a Mangrove sea tree will be planted, each capable of negating a ton of harmful CO2 emissions.

Fridays for Future
The organisation headed up by teenage climate activist Greta Thurnberg launched a new campaign on Earth Day 2020. The video, inspired by her speech at the World Economic Forum was created by agency FF Los Angeles and brings to vivid life the reality of how we are living our daily lives in the middle of a serious global crisis.
